LAMBORGHINI CHAMPIONS TO BE CROWNED AND ‘SPECIAL EVENT’ AT ITALIAN FINALE

The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series returns home for a thrilling 2010 season finale on 24-26 September, while a very special event is set to take place at noon on Sunday 12 September in the Super Trofeo Village.

As well as Pro Drivers’, Pro-Am Drivers’ and Teams’ Champion titles being settled in front of home fans at the Vallelunga circuit, near Rome, Italy, after rounds 16, 17 and 18 of the world’s fastest one-make series, two-time World Motorcycling Champion and former Formula One driver Johnny Cecotto will make his Super Trofeo debut alongside his son and, in an unprecedented end of season event, there will be a very special joint Lamborghini and Blacpain unveiling in the Super Trofeo Village.

In the Pro Drivers’ category, only 14 points separate standings leader Mirko Venturi and reigning champion Fabio Babini ahead of the last rounds and with 45 points up for grabs, the title can still go either way. With a 30-point deficit to Venturi, Blancpain Reiter Engineering driver and ADAC GT Masters leader Peter Kox has a steeper hill to climb, but is still within reach of the top prize.

In the Pro-Am Drivers’ category, a new champion will claim the ultimate honours. There is a tough battle at the top between two consistent gentleman racers, who have both scored points in every round to date: Touringauto pilot Eugenio Amos has an 18-point lead over second-placed Ferruccio Bellini, who drives for Bonaldi Motorsport. Black Bull Swiss Racing’s Tommaso Maino and Blancpain President and CEO Marc A. Hayek are still in contention but have 23 and 33-point gaps to Amos respectively.

Touringauto is currently topping the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Teams’ table but a close fight is expected as the Italian team is only five points clear of second-placed Black Bull Swiss Racing. The title isn’t guaranteed for either team though with third, fourth and fifth-placed MIK Corse, Bonaldi Motorsport and Blancpain Reiter Engineering all within reach of the title.

Appearing in the #1 Automobili Lamborghini VIP guest car, Johnny Cecotto will compete in the 570 hp four-wheel drive Lamborghini Super Trofeo for the first time but is no stranger to racing in Italy, having claimed the Italian Touring Car Championship title in 1989. The former DTM and 24 Hours of Le Mans star will be partnered by his son Johnny Cecotto Jr., a rising star in F1 feeder series GP2. The duo have not raced together as team-mates before, making their first Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo outing a truly special occasion.

The #2 Automobili Lamborghini VIP guest car will be raced by journalists from two top European motoring publications: Giampaolo Tenchini will represent Italy’s Autocar magazine on the grid and will share driving duties with Jochen Uebler from Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport.

“It has been an incredible season for Lamborghini, full of outstanding on-track battles and breathtaking action,” said Manfred Fitzgerald, Director of Brand and Design at Automobili Lamborghini. “With the title fights lasting until the final race weekend of the season, the strength and the competitiveness of the series is evident. It’s great to see the championship play out on Lamborghini’s home soil.”

At Vallelunga, the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo partners the Italian GT Championship. Qualifying starts at 13:00 (CET) on Saturday 25 September and will be followed by round 16 at 17:50 (CET). On-track action on Sunday 26 September begins with round 17 at 08:40 (CET) before the season concludes with round 18, starting at 13:40 (CET).

Radio Monte Carlo (RMC1), one of the most popular radio stations in Italy, will provide updates from the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo throughout the Vallelunga race weekend. With coverage in “RMC Motori” on Friday 24 September at 19.05 (CET), Saturday 25 September at 12.30 (CET) and from 14.00 (CET) on Sunday 26 September in “Music & Sports”, tune in to RMC1 or go to radiomontecarlo to keep up-to-date with the latest race action.
