Win elevates Lamborghini duo to third in the drivers’ championship
Sant’Agata Bolognese, Thursday July 11. Hari Proczyk (AUT) and David Mengesdorf (DEU) in the #17 Rhino’s Leipert Motorsport Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 recorded their maiden 2012 season victory in a thrilling Race Two of the FIA GT3 European Championship at Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal.
The win extended a sequence of podium finishes at every round the Lamborghini pair have competed in this season – having missed the first round at Nogaro. The victory also elevates them to third in the drivers’ standings.
In Race One on the previous day, they had finished third behind the championship leaders – Maximilian Buhk (DEU) and Dominik Baumann (AUT) – in the Heico Gravity-Charouz Mercedes SLS AMG GT3.
Proczyk was delighted to finally reach the top step. “We have been on the podium each race weekend so far – six podiums in all, so it is nice to get the win at last,” he said.
“To be honest I didn’t really expect this result here as the Mercedes has been very strong all weekend. For the championship, who knows, but we are consistent so that is the positive thing,” he concluded.
The Reiter Lamborghini #24 featured Russian driver Natalia Freidina and Albert von Thurn und Taxis (DEU). The pair finished down the order in both races.
In the drivers’ championship battle, Proczyk and Mengesdorf move to third on 109 points behind leaders Buhk and Baumann on 129 points.
Meanwhile, in the FIA GT1 World Championship, Peter Kox (NLD) and Darryl O’Young (CHN) in the Reiter Engineering Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, finished fourth in the Championship Race during the fifth round in the Algarve.
In the Italian GT Championship at Misano, the Imperiale Racing SRL Italian duo of Giorgio Sanna and Davide Stancheris also recorded a victory in Race One in the GT Cup class, ranked 10th overall, but suffered a retirement in the second race due to tyre problems.
