Barcelona Hosts Penultimate SUPER TROFEO RACE WEEKEND

After the last rounds of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo were spent racing in the English sunshine at Silverstone, the series now travels to the Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain, on 18-20 September 2009 for rounds 13, 14, and 15 of the season.

The field of Super Trofeo cars, a derivative of the road going Gallardo LP 560-4, make up the fastest one-make series in the world. At Barcelona, four new VIP guest drivers will make their debut, including former Ferrari Formula One driver Ivan Capelli, and the first female driver to compete, German TV Presenter Christina Surer. They will be joined by Jaime Hernandez and Juan Collín, competing for team Automobili Lamborghini. The VIP drivers will experience first-hand the severe competition that has been the trademark of the series, fuelled by the power of the Lamborghini’s V10 5.2 litre ‘Iniezione Diretta Stratificata’ engine.

Professional and ‘gentlemen’ drivers alike have the opportunity to stretch the car’s legs in this series, and the results are far from predictable. Silverstone saw 11 different drivers take the podium and welcomed the first win of the series for both Autovitesse and Reiter Engineering teams. The Circuit de Catalunya is guaranteed to provide three more thrilling rounds, as the cars race to the chequered flag.

Competitors at Barcelona will include Pro and Pro-am championship leaders Fabio Babini and Claudio Rossetto of team Petri Corse, 2004 Le Mans Endurance Series Champion, Alexander Frei, and 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner Peter Kox. The Dutchman will race behind-the-wheel of the #24 car for Reiter Engineering along with team-mate Marc A. Hayek, President and CEO of Blancpain, the series’ title sponsor.

“We couldn’t be more delighted with the progression of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series,” commented Lamborghini’s Director of Brand and Design, Manfred Fitzgerald. “It has achieved exactly what we intended, taking Lamborghini to a different audience through the means of motorsport. At Lamborghini our principals are quality, performance and professionalism, and as ever, this has been delivered in the Super Trofeo series.”
