DREAM START FOR THE SILVERSTONE LAMBORGHINI

Petri Corse’s Fabio Babini and Claudio Rossetto secured the round 10 victory in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series at Silverstone, UK, on 15 August 2009.

Babini secured pole position after setting a fastest lap of 1:23.150 early on in this morning’s 30-minute qualifying session. It’s the team’s second pole position of the season, having set the fastest lap at the Super Trofeo’s inaugural race weekend in Adria, Italy.

Reiter Engineering managed to clinch a front-row start in the last 30 seconds of the session after Peter Kox drove faultlessly to deliver a time of 1:24.223. The #11 of Autovitesse started on the second row, as Jonathan Cochet secured the third fastest time of 1:24.282. Achim Winter started alongside in the #77 Lamborghini Racing Eastern Europe Super Trofeo, with guest driver Roger Green behind, after his team-mate Andy Wallace lapped the circuit in 1:26.479.

As the Super Trofeo race cars crossed the start line, Rossetto took the lead, chased by Alexander Frei in the #11. By the end of the second lap, Bonaldi Motorsport’s Ferruccio Bellini had improved his position to third after starting fifth on the grid, while Frei passed Rossetto to claim the lead.

From 10th, Michael Scheublein had a strong start to move up to fourth place, while Bellini passed Rossetto for second and began closing in on leader Frei, decreasing the gap to just 0.295 seconds.

After the mandatory pit stops, Babini took the lead in the #22, with Frei’s
team-mate Cochet second and Bellini third. From fifth place, Peter Kox in the #24 Reiter Engineering Super Trofeo moved-up to fourth place and began closing in on Bellini. However, he was unable to close the gap before the chequered flag and crossed the line fourth. Babini took the win, with Cochet securing second place and Bellini third.

“It was a good result for us. The weather today has been incredible after this morning’s cloud; it was so hot!” said Babini. “I’m extremely happy with the car today, it has again been perfect, and I’m very happy for Lamborghini for hosting yet another excellent race.”

“We’ve hit the midway point in the inaugural season of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, and we are thrilled with the standard of competition,” said Lamborghini’s Director of Brand and Design, Manfred Fitzgerald. “The format, with professional drivers supporting amateurs, has resulted in strong competition between the teams, m aking fascinating racing for drivers.”
