Lamborghini heads east with title fights in full swing

Fresh from the latest three rounds at the infamous Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the raging bulls are back with more wheel-to-wheel racing for rounds 13, 14 and 15 of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series at the challenging Hungaroring, near Budapest, Hungary. The title battle is heating up between Mirko Venturi and Fabio Babini for Pro Drivers’ honours, while Pro-Am drivers are as eager as ever to close the gap to standings leader Eugenio Amos. VIP guest drivers Norbert Michelisz from the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), as well as FIA GT3 European Championship pilots Csaba Walter and Stéphane Lémeret will try their hands in the 570 hp Lamborghini Super Trofeo race cars on 21-22 August 2010.

For the first time in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, a current FIA WTCC competitor will get behind the wheel of the #1 Automobili Lamborghini VIP car: local driver Norbert Michelisz, 2009 SEAT León Eurocup Champion and a rising star in the FIA WTCC with six Rookie Challenge victories, will make the switch from touring cars to the world’s fastest one-make series for the upcoming three rounds. The Hungarian will be partnered by official Lamborghini test driver Giorgio Sanna, who currently races a Lamborghini Super Trofeo in the Italian GT Championship. The Italian pilot had a significant influence in deriving the Super Trofeo race car from the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 road model and will take this opportunity to contribute its on-going development.

Hungarian pilot Csaba Walter, a recent FIA GT3 European Championship race winner and 2010 24 Hours of Dubai class winner, will take over the four-wheel drive #2 Automobili Lamborghini VIP car. His team-mate Belgian GT3 pilot Stéphane Lémeret will put his extensive racing experience to use in the three 40-minute races during the weekend.

The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Pro Drivers’ title race is wide open as standings leader Mirko Venturi and 2009 Pro Drivers Champion Fabio Babini are only six points apart. With 15 points up for grabs in each race, Venturi will push his V10 ‘Iniezione Diretta Stratificata’ engine to the limit to keep Babini, as well as former 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner Peter Kox behind him.

Meanwhile, in the Pro-Am Drivers’ standings Eugenio Amos looks to extend his lead from his closest rivals Ferruccio Bellini and Tommaso Maino, who are tied in second place. Bonaldi Motorsport driver Bellini finished the 2009 season third and is hoping to go at least one better this time around, while Maino is on a roll coming off the back off his double victory in Spa with team-mate Venturi. The Teams’ title race is just as closely fought with Black Bull Swiss Racing and Touringauto on equal points at the top, with MIK Corse only three points behind, while Bonaldi Motorsport also in the running with just a 14-point gap from the leaders.

“As we are into the second half of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo season, it’s evident that the driver line-up only keeps getting stronger and the competition is top notch,” said Manfred Fitzgerald, Director of Brand and Design at Automobili Lamborghini. “We have a number of enthusiastic

Pro-Am drivers, with others looking to join the series as we speak. Our VIP guest drivers from the FIA World Touring Car Championship and the FIA GT3 European Championship will find the Super Trofeo an exciting challenge, and as ever, we will see a tough battle for glory at the Hungaroring.”

For the first time, at the Hungaroring the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo will partner the world’s premier endurance racing championship, the Le Mans Series.
